Jan Morley Art Courses

As artists, we've all experienced these frustrations:

  • Feeling constrained by traditional techniques and "proper" methods
  • Second-guessing every brushstroke and losing the joy in your creative process
  • Comparing your work to others and feeling your art isn't "good enough"
  • Creating technically proficient work that somehow feels lifeless or disconnected from your true expression
  • Fearing judgment when you try something unconventional or unusual.
  • Getting stuck in creative blocks because you're overthinking rather than feeling
  • You KNOW you are good at painting but sometimes you can feel a bit held back by your fear of ruining what you have already done and, strangely, that is when you need to throw caution to the wind
On the Moors contemporary Art

Imagine approaching your canvas with confidence and excitement instead of hesitation and doubt.

 Picture yourself:

  • Embracing spontaneity and intuitive mark-making that brings life to your artwork
  • Developing a distinctive style that feels authentically yours
  • Finding joy in the creative process itself, not just the final result
  • Creating work that resonates on an emotional level with viewers
  • Building a portfolio that stands out with its freshness and originality
  • Rediscovering the childlike freedom and playfulness that originally drew you to art
  • Loving your paintings and feeling that they are coming from your authentic self

I came across Jan Morley's taster video about how to loosen up my art.

I painted along with her and was thrilled with the results, so did another quick painting using her methods and am now using that to work up a bigger piece of work.

Jan makes it really easy to loosen up my work.

Jan's course is a great way to get your brain not to interfere so much with what you are doing. It really allows you to free yourself of preconcieved notions that you can't shake about what your art should look like.

I love this!

Jan at Mall Galleries

Hello -

I (Jan ) have been a designer for the last 38 years and run my own business designing and selling cards, gifts and homewares but when I hit my fifties I suddenly had a strong urge to paint, to express myself in my own way, not to follow a design trend or the next big thing.

So I joined an oil painting class, which I loved and I learned a lot but it wasn't until I joined a mark making class that I found the joy of letting my hands run free and getting my head out of the way and just watching the paint do it's own thing.

I found my own way of doing it...

I call it sloshing.

The verb slosh means to splash around in a liquid (or for a liquid to splash around haphazardly). Implies a messiness, sloppiness, or loss of control.

I use the term sloshing to take the seriousness out of making art; to give a sense of playfulness, of freedom.

There are no rules in sloshing, there are no shoulds or shouldn’ts, really anything goes…..but that can bring about feelings of fear; fear of lack of control; fear of letting go, it is almost like the rules keep us contained, we know where we are with rules - but if you want to loosen up your painting, you have to let go to find your own marks and language.

Sloshing helped me to get a painting in The Mall Galleries.

Sloshing got me participating in Landscape Artist of the Year as a wild card.

Sloshing got me longlisted in Women in Art Prize.
