I (Jan ) have been a designer for the last 38 years and run my own business designing and selling cards, gifts and homewares but when I hit my fifties I suddenly had a strong urge to paint, to express myself in my own way, not to follow a design trend or the next big thing.

I found my own way of doing it...
I call it sloshing.
The verb slosh means to splash around in a liquid (or for a liquid to splash around haphazardly). Implies a messiness, sloppiness, or loss of control.
I use the term sloshing to take the seriousness out of making art; to give a sense of playfulness, of freedom.
There are no rules in sloshing, there are no shoulds or shouldn’ts, really anything goes…..but that can bring about feelings of fear; fear of lack of control; fear of letting go, it is almost like the rules keep us contained, we know where we are with rules - but if you want to loosen up your painting, you have to let go to find your own marks and language.
