Twilight Drama

This small painting has the intensity of something much larger. Acid yellow and dark olive sweep diagonally across the lower half in bold, confident strokes, while black ink moves through the composition in sharp, decisive lines, crossing, dripping, marking. A band of pale teal holds the upper middle ground and white opens above it, the sky caught at that particular moment of twilight when the last light is still warm but the dark is already arriving with purpose. The whole painting feels charged, as though something is about to happen or has just happened and the landscape is still holding the energy of it.

Twilight Drama is about the heightened quality of feeling that arrives at the edges of things, the end of the day, the end of a certainty, the moment when one state gives way to another and everything briefly becomes more vivid and more present than it usually allows itself to be. Where Twilight Drama charges, Twilight Flight releases. The palette here is cooler and more diffuse, grey, teal, ochre and white moving in layered diagonal bands across the surface, ink spattering and lines crossing with a lighter touch, the energy dispersed rather than concentrated. The lower half opens into pale, broken ground and the upper edge lifts toward a quiet sky. Something has just left, or is leaving, the mood is of aftermath and motion, of a landscape exhaling after the drama has passed.

Together these two paintings hold the full arc of a twilight, the charged arrival of dark and the quiet release into it. Hung as a pair they are in complete conversation, each making the other more fully itself.
