Standing Ground - An Exhibition by Jan Morley

Standing Ground – An online exhibition by Jan Morley
These paintings are about return. Return to landscape, to the body, to the quiet certainty of knowing who you are and where you stand.
Jan Morley makes work that moves through emotional uncertainty, the shyness, the self-doubt, the feeling of being untethered from your own inner world, and finds its way back. Moorlands, estuaries, open coastlines and wide skies become the holding structure for that journey, places where what feels fragmented can slowly come into coherence, where the noise drops away and something truer rises to the surface.
The paintings in this exhibition span the full range of that experience, from the most tender and uncertain moments to the most defiant and sovereign ones. From the quiet persistence of a landscape at dusk to the full, volcanic force of feeling reclaimed. From the first tentative mark of belonging to the unambiguous declaration: I am not too much. I belong here. My depth stands.
To stand your ground is to be connected, to the earth beneath you, to the landscape that holds you, to the core of what you know to be true about yourself. These paintings do not offer that connection as a destination. They offer it as something you already have, waiting beneath the surface, asking only to be remembered.
