The Horizon Keeps – Contemporary mixed media landscape by Jan Morley – Hung in your home, it keeps that line, steady, entirely certain of itself and you.
Description
The Horizon Keeps
This painting holds an estuary or lake at the moment between weather and light, a wide, luminous foreground of teal, white and warm gold spreading across the lower half of the canvas in vertical marks that move like rain on water, or light through mist, or time passing through a place that has learned to receive it. Dark hills sit low on the horizon line, solid and unhurried, and above them a complex, textured sky moves in grey and blue, neither fully settled nor fully breaking, a sky that is thinking, holding, waiting.
The horizon in this painting is precise and unwavering. Everything above it shifts and everything below it shimmers and nothing resolves, and yet the line itself holds. That is the whole painting. The horizon keeps its position regardless of what the weather does above it or what the water does below it. It simply remains, offering, as it always has, the promise of more beyond what is immediately visible. The Horizon Keeps is the anchor work for this series because it says the simplest and most complete thing: that no matter what moves through you, something holds the line. That the horizon was never going anywhere. And neither, when it comes to it, were you. Hung in your home, it keeps that line in the room, steady, luminous, and entirely certain of itself.
