Across two wide panels, the moorland opens in a broad, sweeping valley, green hills rolling quietly in the distance under a pale, open sky, the landscape above the horizon line almost gentle. But below it, everything fractures. Bold strokes of blazing orange slash across the middle of both panels like fire through the hillside, and the foreground erupts in dark, urgent marks, black gorse rendered in sharp, aggressive gestures, tangled and dense, crowding the lower edge with a wildness that the soft hills above seem entirely unaware of.
The title holds a tenderness the marks don’t immediately reveal. Hiding in the gorse, not lost, not trapped, but tucked in. The gorse is fierce and bright and impenetrable, and for the right creature, in the right moment, that is exactly the point. This is a painting about the times when you need to go unseen, when the wisest thing is to pull back into the wildness, let the bright thorns do their work, and wait until you are ready to emerge. Not hiding as failure, but hiding as strategy. As self-protection. As the intelligent instinct of something alive that knows when to be still and when to move.
