Turning Tide – Contemporary Original Art
I made this drawing outdoors at Ynys, sitting on the edge of the estuary as the tide began to turn. The channels were still carved bright across the sands, and I could feel the light changing before I could see it. The wind was pulling at the paper, so the charcoal went down fast and hard in the foreground, dragged in the same direction as the weather. Ochre and gold caught the low sun on the marsh grass, while the distant hill sat quiet in a grey wash, holding everything steady.
There’s a stillness in a turning tide that isn’t really stillness at all. Everything is about to move. Working on the spot, I wanted the marks to carry that tension: the scratch and sweep of lines running towards the water, the dark weight of the shoreline, the open Welsh sky waiting overhead. For me, it’s a picture of that threshold moment we all know, when something has already begun to change and we’re only just catching up with it.
