Held Ground – Contemporary Original Art
Held Ground was made outside, with the sky already turning. You can see it in the top of the paper, the spatters of ink falling like the first drops, the graphite lines pulled sideways by the wind. Up there everything is moving.
But down below, the ground holds. The ochre and olive of the moor grass, the dark knots of heather and gorse pressed in with charcoal, the hills laid down in quick, certain marks. Little flares of red and orange push through, the bracken catching what light there is. There was no time to be careful, and I didn’t want to be.
This is the kind of drawing that only happens on site, when I’m standing in the open with cold hands and the weather gathering, responding faster than I can think. It’s where the bigger work begins. Held Ground is about that moment of not running from the storm, but staying, rooted and alive, and letting the ground beneath me do the holding.
