Loosening – Contemporary Original Art

£195.00

Drawn on the moor with the wind pulling at the paper. A plein air piece about letting go of the need to get it right, and feeling the land open up in return.

Description

Loosening – Contemporary Original Art

Loosening started tight. I could feel myself gripping the charcoal, trying to pin the hills down. Then the wind picked up, the sky smudged itself into long grey streaks, and something in me gave way.

You can see the moment it happens. The marks start to wander. Graphite loops and scribbles across the moor, swathes of mustard yellow are laid down in loose blocks, and threads of bright orange run through the land like bracken catching the light. The distant hills turn soft and plum-coloured, barely there. White paper is left open everywhere, room to breathe.

Groundwork drawings are where I learn to trust my hand again. Out in the open, with no time to fuss, the only way through is to soften: shoulders down, wrist free, eyes on the land rather than the page. Loosening is that unclenching. Not losing my grip on things, just holding them more lightly, and finding there’s more space than I thought.
