Tor Light – Contemporary Original Art by Jan Morley.
I’d been sitting with grey for most of the morning. Then the cloud thinned, a wash of turquoise opened up over the tors, and the whole moor seemed to take a breath.
The granite tops sit quietly on the skyline, sketched in grey and graphite, solid and old. Below them the grass glows a deep gold, laid in with warm, quick sweeps. Wind-bent hawthorns lean into the slope in black charcoal, and in the foreground the colour starts to sing: streaks of violet heather, flicks of acid yellow gorse, all scattered through the white of the paper like light catching on wet ground.
These Groundwork drawings teach me to wait. You can’t make the light arrive, you can only stay long enough to be there when it does. Tor Light is about that reward for staying: the sudden lift, the colour returning, and the feeling that something in me has cleared along with the sky.
