Tidal Ebb Print

The tide has pulled back, leaving the shore bare and honest: rust-red cliffs, pools of sky caught in the rocks, the sea drawn out to a thin, silver line. This is the estuary at its most exposed, that quiet hour when the land shows everything it usually keeps hidden.

I painted this en plein air, working fast to catch the light before it shifted again. There’s a particular stillness to low tide, a pause between one rhythm and the next, and I wanted the brushwork to hold that: loose, weathered, unhurried.

For me, this stretch of coast has always been about permission. Permission to stand still. To take up space on an empty shore. To let the mess of rock and weed and puddled light be beautiful exactly as it is, with nothing tidied away.
